Archeology Uncovered

Ku-wait. Arche-ology. Not many think they mix, but they do - sometimes overwhelmingly. I work at the National Museum in the Archeology Department. Here are my ongoings... [email me at ArcheologyUncovered [at] gmail [dot] com ]

KB4 4EVER! (lol)

i tried uploading the pics for the post below.
didn't work again :(

i'm going to try to upload pics here first to see if all is well in blogger-land.

here goes: (after two attempts)

YAY! it works!

ok cool, lemme give you some background on this:

So we're basically numbering the artifacts from from Bhaita (Sharg, basically).

The numbering sequence goes as such:

KB4/331(which is what i left at today).

K is for Kuwait, B is for Bhaita, and 4 is the 4th Tell that they excavated.

Pretty simple.

So!

Bhaita basically goes back to 1820, which is so recent that they have newbie's like me do it :p But it's super cool, becuase it also goes to 1950, which you can tell, becuase suddenly everything goes from like, boring to extravagant in terms of tiles, pottery, and glass.

When i went onsite it was easy to see who lived in an impressive house, as they tended to have 'rukhaam' and had HUGE water wells, which i suppose was the scale of comparison.

Onto the Pictures!

As i've been working alone for the past two days, and i am the one to whom the non-archeological team looks to, i get to pick what i want to number. So, i go on a mini-excavation and rummage through these boxes, which contain already catalogued, cleaned, and restored pieces. This is all done to the sound of Blondie, who i find helps create a nice numbering (and ink-spilling!) beat.

Yay! A porcelain Sheesha pipe head (i shoulda taken pics of the glass one! It was impressive). But oh well, sheesha pipe thingie. Kept trying to smell it for that amazing sheesha smell, but then realized that shoving my nose in cylinder isn't entirely smart. Fiona Apple is good for smelling.

We find a lot of weird stuff in Bhaita, and nothing really ruffles our feathers, since it's so recent and therefore so like, commercial and popular. So it really didn't faze me when i found these coconut shells in a water well. lol. It's all good :p Coconuts remind me of Janet Jackson. That's Ms. Jackson to you.

This is my favorite part of the day, and not becuase i was singing Phantom at the top of my (lowest) lung. It seemed to me that these pieces were not completed entirely. I didn't see those before, so i was very curious and excited to see what they would yield. After i got frustrated after 20 minutes (which is a REALLY long time trying to piece stuff together), i decided to call in the archeologist whose name was on the paper. Said it was the like, whatchumacallit, the like, (oh man), oh!, the 'zeena' on the top of the walls, but from outside. So like, the house, on the outside, this is what adorned the top part, like an outside 'cornich', if you may. Turns out it didn't piece together becuase there were like, a LOT more bags of this stuff, although i've never seen it.

So yes,
This is day five (we started on Monday, and today is Sunday), and so far i'm on 331, which is a lot, considering most of the time i am to choose what i think we should do.
The only criterion i was given was number it if it has:
-a pattern
-a base
-an ending
-looks interesting
-reminds you of something previous
So far it looks like i'm doing good, although i keep asking them to check up on my work.
I basically paint on the piece, number it with liquid ink, then seal the deal with another coat of nail polish. It's overwhelming that this is all like, going in the catalogues.

It tickles my funny bone, really.
What do you do? :p

Until next time, compadres,
-me.
